All year round, our campsite Les Pialades invites you to visit the market in Sarlat, which takes place every Wednesday and Saturday morning. The traditional open-air market of the medieval town gathers the best local products of the Périgord, which make the gastronomic reputation of the Dordogne. You will also salivate over foie gras, duck breast, confit, and rillettes, all of which come from Périgord ducks and geese. Local cheeses will be proudly presented, including cabécou and Rocamadour (goat cheeses). Finally, you can’t miss the excellent wines of the Dordogne (Bergerac, Pécharmant…)!

The curious statue of the Three Geese

Sarlat also has many other attractions that are not to be missed. The statue of the Three Geese, which represents the gastronomic excellence of the Périgord, is one example. Its square is a favourite spot for photographers. The campsite Les Pialades will advise you on the many places to visit near Sarlat during your stay near Sarlat.

The Lascaux caves

You have certainly heard of it. The Lascaux cave is located in the commune of Montignac, north of the town of Sarlat. It was made famous when four young men discovered it on 8 September 1940. In this “Sistine Chapel of Prehistory” are preserved paintings and engravings dating from 17,000 to 18,000 years ago. If the original can no longer be visited, you can visit the facsimile of Lascaux II or the recently opened International Centre for Cave Art, known as Lascaux IV.

Castle of Castelnaud-la-Chapelle

15 kilometres from Sarlat, the castle of Castelnaud dominates the valley on a rocky outcrop at the confluence of the Dordogne and the Céou. Its visit will plunge you into the world of the Middle Ages. It was the scene of Franco-English confrontations during the Hundred Years’ War. Its war museum has a collection of weapons and armour dating from the 15th to 17th centuries. And if you spend the summer there, you will be able to see many demonstrations.

The Gardens of Marqueyssac

9 km from Sarlat, the Marqueyssac Gardens are home to 150,000 boxwood trees on a promontory facing the castle of Castelnaud. Overlooking the Dordogne Valley, you will admire magnificent views of the village of La Roque-Gageac, the fortress of Beynac… The most visited gardens in Périgord, they are classified as a masterpiece of topiary art. Every Thursday evening in summer, the gardens are illuminated by candlelight in a romantic and musical atmosphere.
